BORED?

September 2018

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.  For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Ephesians 2:8-10

Are you bored with life and not even noticing it? That can happen. Sometimes we’re so caught up in routine, that we’re blind to anything that might lie beyond. Blind to the notion that there might be something much more interesting awaiting us—work for which we can use the gifts God has given us.

Remember those activities you always enjoyed so much—activities you might have allowed to slide? Is what you spend your time on now as meaningful as those might be?

To have a life, you have to make it happen. Break out of your routine—routine that might not have much meaning anyway. Life is so much more exciting when we create something that might have lasting value. So much more fulfilling when we do something that will be beneficial, not only to ourselves, but to others.

God has given each of us gifts designed to help us do his work. You might not at this moment know what that work is, but it’s there, waiting for you. Each of us has a special role to play in building God’s kingdom, one he equipped us for. And helping God build his kingdom is more satisfying and fulfilling than anything else. It makes life worth living.

God has something waiting for us beyond routine. Something that will make our life count. As I recently heard a pastor say, “We’re made to be part of something bigger than our everyday life.”

God has a unique plan for each of us to serve him in this world. Gradually he prepares us to do the good works he had long ago planned for us to do. Amongst other things, they include kindness, love, mercy, compassion, help to one another, and meeting one another’s needs.

Sit with God for a while. Talk to him. Listen to him. Is he leading you somewhere today?
