You will keep in perfect peace
all who trust in you,
all whose thoughts are fixed on you!
Trust in the Lord always,
for the Lord God is the eternal Rock.

Isaiah 26:3-4 NLT

We hear a lot about finding peace in God… and don’t we all need it! But how can we find peace with all that’s happening around us? What about the many who are suffering from depression and anxiety—some for the first time in their life? How can peace become part of their lives?

And what is peace anyway? For most of us peace means:

  • a feeling that everything in our life is alright,
  • the ability to relax without stressful thoughts filling our mind,
  • the ability to sleep well—feeling safe like a child in her mother’s arm.

The words from Isaiah 26 in the scripture at the top, holds the secret. We need to trust God and fix our minds on him. Trusting will help us find peace.

Faith gives us the ability to believe in a God who can’t be physically seen, but who is never-the-less always there. We can learn to have faith by giving God a place in our life—by making a place for him in our very being. If you haven’t already done so, ask God to help you do that. Some of us don’t stop moving around enough to pray such a prayer. But today, in this world that has slowed down in many ways, it may be easier to learn to feel God’s presence—easier to believe that he is very much there.

Find a quiet place and a quiet time. And, with your hands resting on your knees, turn your palms upward and invite God to become a part of your life. No fancy words required. All you need to do is to talk to him from your heart, as you would to a friend. He will hear you.

Having God as part of your life would mean you will never have to feel alone, not even during bad times. Not even during times of depression when it seems that no one understands you.

God has an everlasting love for us, a love that’s as special as a parent’s love for their children. Think of what a great thing it is to be loved in that way! When you trust God as your heavenly Father who will take care of you, you’ll start feeling a greater sense of peace.

We can’t create God’s peace on our own. It’s God’s to give to you. God’s very nature is peace. His very nature is love. And love and peace are inextricably linked. There can be no peace without love.

By surrendering to God and letting him have control, you’ll find yourself worrying less. It will be easier to live in the here and now, not thinking so much about the future.

God is good. Now and forever.
