To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
John 8:31-32
I awoke from a nap on Monday with the words, “The truth will set you free” on my mind. And I wondered why Jesus had given me that line to chew on.
It’s Wednesday, and I’m still chewing, still wondering. But other familiar lines have joined that one—all promising “something.”
Isn’t that the way Jesus talks to us sometimes? He gives us words from the Bible that we may have forgotten about or whose meanings have become lost to us as we travelled through life.
“I am the way and the truth and the life.” (John 14:6) Another good line.
Life has become difficult. Things are not as they once were. I’m not trusted in the way I was. Due to my age? Due to mistakes I’ve made? Due to illness I’ve struggled with?
But thank God for friends—friends who know you, friends who have Jesus’ love inside them.
Over the past while, friends have reminded me of what’s most important. It’s not about people, it’s about you, Jesus. Though we may have lost much, we still have you. Life is still worth living.
Your truth is all we need, the truth that we can count on you to be with us, no matter what. And—in the words of the song, “we can face tomorrow, just because you live.”
That truth sets me free and gives me peace. Indeed, it gives me joy.
