This is not exactly a sparrow. Nevertheless, this daisy also seems insignificant. Yet God notices it.
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Matthew 10:29-31
In the tenth chapter of the book of Matthew Jesus is preparing to send the disciples out, giving them authority “to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.” He warns them that they won’t always be welcomed. They will be like “sheep amid wolves.” This must have frightened the disciples, as it would anyone who wanted to carry the Lord’s message to the world.
But Jesus shows that he won’t abandon them. What he told his disciples is what he is saying to all of us today: “Do not be afraid.”
God cares about things we don’t even notice. He even notices an insignificant sparrow as it falls. Jesus says he can number the hairs on your head. The point Jesus is making is that God has an intimate knowledge about every detail of our lives. When others don’t understand what we’re going through, God understands.
Sparrows do fall eventually. And sooner or later troubles come to all of God’s creatures. Sometimes huge troubles like what our world is facing today. But if God notices a small sparrow, he certainly notices us—each one of us—as we do our best to deal with our lives today. We can trust him. He will always take notice of us.
“Do not be afraid.”
